This was the first version of RMC's website, when I was just
getting back into the field of HTML design. While the
front page looked good (at least I thought so :P), many of
the other pages seemed cluttered. This was soon fixed
in Revision 2.
If you were with us in our beginning months, you probably
remember the news ticker (in the picture above, it's a gray
bar) displaying what IRC network the channel had most
recently moved to. These were some rough times, but
eventually we made our way back to StarChat.
Revision 2
In
Revision 2, the RMC website moved to frames and a more graphical layout,
with heavy use of tables. This proved to be a bit of a problem, as
Internet Explorer and Netscape handle table background images
differently. The result was not always pleasing. The RMC
shield, logo and divider-bars were carried over from the first
design. We also implemented a low-resolution site. This
redesign came when we settled back on StarChat and again had an influx of
new members. We adopted a policy where frequent users had to submit
character applications, but that went the way of the dodo. The next
step was making the channel private, and the decision was made one fateful
evening...
Revision 3
...and here we are,
Revision 3. I myself was
surprised how much the website changed over time. We added a second
frame on the right to convey important information, and got rid of the
red-misty backgrounds in the tables. Hammering out a new design took
about two days, and converting the site's material over to the new format
took a little over a week. The design may be a bit cramped, but the
optimum viewing resolution is 1024x768. Plus, there was still a
low-resolution alternative available.
Revision 4
This revision was a spur-of-the-moment thing. The 3rd
rendition of the RMC site was still a fine design which many
people liked, but I decided I wanted a more simplified,
low-resolution friendly site. So, this was it - #4. The sidebar
navigation banner (Csagrada's battle-standard, look for it on
our Hotline file server!) was done by Sylvia T. Leung.
Unfortunately, this revision only supported a resolution of 800x600 and
higher, and did not display properly on lower resolutions and on some
web-browsers.
Revision 5
And now, Revision 5. I know
I've said #4 would be the last revision of the website, but I guess I was
wrong. Will there be a Version 6? I have no idea... I've finally achieved full compatibility with all resolutions
and web-browsers, and the layout allows for heaps and heaps of information
- all easily accessible. I'm a bit unhappy with limiting myself to accommodate
a 640x480 resolution, figuring that most, if not all, computer users today
use an 800x600 resolution at the very least. Perhaps, someday, there will
be a Version 6.
