Welcome!
Welcome to RedMist Castle! We are a free-form roleplaying group on the Sorcery IRC network. RedMist has been in existence for over four years now, and we are continuing to grow and change. We hope you’ll enjoy your roleplaying experience with us.

RedMist Castle is operated by experienced roleplayers from across the US and around the globe, with backgrounds in various pen-and-paper roleplaying games, as well as experience in other online roleplaying forums. We hope new players will bring with them some experience in roleplaying, either online or offline. We will work with you to help you get acclimatized to our style of roleplaying, which has more of a set environment and ongoing storyline than most other online RP places, and we’re happy to give you tips and advice to help you create a unique character or persona.

As we said, our style of roleplaying is somewhat different from that of other roleplaying rooms on IRC. We focus often on storylines and quests that involve players and their characters. There are times for relaxing and chatting idly in the tavern, and there are times for grand adventure and harrowing escapes from deadly foes. Our staff and players act as gamemasters, dungeonmasters, storytellers, and moderators, handling the details of various plots, and playing NPCs (non-player characters) at the castle and in other locations on the world of Terrin.

RedMist Castle may or may not be what you’re looking for in online RP. Our players tend to be laid back and have a relaxed attitude about roleplaying, as opposed to some of the more hardcore online roleplayers out there. Still, we are dedicated roleplayers, and we welcome new friends and new ideas.

If you are uncertain about joining us, or feel you are having a hard time fitting in, please don’t hesitate to speak with one of the channel operators or e-mail one of the staff via the Contact Us page. We’ll do our best to answer your questions.

If you would like to roleplay in Redmist, please submit your character(s) for approval, via the form on our website. DO NOT fill out a character form if you are not a serious roleplayer with a real interest in joining our group. We are looking for dedicated, creative players and gamemasters who want to add their talents, personalities, and ideas to the world we've created.

    Where is RedMist Castle?

RedMist Castle is an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel. It's not an AOL chatroom, but it is somewhat similar. IRC is a collection of chat servers that host channels/rooms for free. RedMist Castle is just one channel among thousands of others, all focusing on various types of discussions or other gaming. If you are applying to RedMist Castle, we would prefer you have some knowledge of IRC.

#RedMist_Castle is the official channel name. This is where we roleplay.

#Delourm_Hall is our Out of Character channel.

We generally role-play in the evenings (United States, Eastern Time) during the week and on weekends. Weekend days may also have role-playing.

We are located on the Sorcery IRC network. Use your IRC client to connect to IRC.Sorcery.Net.

Visit http://www.sorcery.net for a listing of Sorcery servers and additional information about IRC.

    Your Character
Your character is the single most important part of your roleplaying. Your character may be an extension of yourself or some aspect(s) of yourself, or it may be an entirely new personality you wish to explore. You’ll find some basic character-related information here; for more detailed information, please read the Rules page.

A Reputation May Precede You
There are racial/species stereotypes on Terrin (RedMist’s world), just as there are anywhere else. In the realm of Csagrada, as well as in many neighboring lands, dragons are generally perceived as evil, treasure-hoarding, fire-breathing beasts; goblins as impish forest goons that are nothing but trouble; orcs as brutish warriors, and so on. Race and Monster Reputations can be found under their respective entries in the Bestiary. Please be aware of these, and their potential effects on your character.

Character Types
Your character can be from any time period you choose, but futuristic characters will come under harsher scrutiny from the gamemasters. A time-traveling soldier with a rifle, a clip of spare ammo, and some rations is not likely to be a problem, but an entire fleet of interstellar spaceships and their alien crews will not be permitted unless they are, by chance, part of a pre-approved plot. RedMist Castle is a medieval, low-tech fantasy setting, so when in doubt, talk to a gamemaster on IRC, or e-mail a staff member via the Contact Us page.

Character Background and History
We encourage you to link your characters to our realm, if they are not already linked to some other world or realm. The history of Terrin may look cut and dried, but we are happy to have players add more depth to it by fleshing out a character’s cultural background or ancestry, so please don’t be shy about tying your character’s background to the history of Csagrada, elsewhere on Athallas, or any other part of Terrin. Historical documents, stories, or explanations of people, places, or events pertaining to your character’s background are welcomed, and may be added to our web page any time. Contact a gamemaster for more information or to submit a document.

Character Allegiance
If you’d like your character to be affiliated with a group or organization (guild, mercenary band, city guard, militia, etc.) of your own creation, and you’d like to have that group recognized as existing in Csagrada, or anywhere on Terrin, feel free to do so, and to contact a gamemaster with the pertinent information. If you like, it can be added to our Organizations page.
    Channel Rules
These rules can be found with more detail on the Rules page.

1. Character Submission
As noted above, you have to submit your character to our Gamemasters for approval before you can roleplay in RedMist Castle. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the IRC channel, the players and Gamemasters, and also with the roleplaying setting we have created before submitting a character. Submit your character only if you intend to actually roleplay in RedMist Castle.

2. No Powergaming
This is perhaps the most important rule in good roleplaying. Unfortunately, many people see roleplaying as a way of making themselves invincible, all-powerful, and unstoppable. Powergaming, also known as "godmoding," has a tendency to result in chaos, and makes it difficult for the gamemasters to provide a believable atmosphere for RP. We try hard to keep our characters believable and realistic, while still making them interesting and fun to play.

3. The Game Master's Word
Many pen-and-paper (or "tabletop") roleplaying games are managed by a single person, usually referred to as the Dungeonmaster (DM) or Gamemaster (GM). A RedMist gamemaster may run a quest or "plot" that involves your character, or may simply run NPCs about the castle. Much like in "tabletop" roleplaying, a gamemaster has total authority over the game, and may rule that your character's actions do not succeed, or that your character takes a hit you were hoping to avoid. This is usually only done in absolute necessity, and mainly if players call for their judgment. Gamemasters are also our channel operators.

4. IRC Actions and Speech
Many IRC clients support colored text. We request that your posts fit the 'standard' criteria for actions (purple), whispers (grey) and very quiet whispers (light grey). Darker colors may also be used, if you wish. Lighter colors usually hurt the eyes, as they are commonly displayed against a white background on most IRC clients.
